Father Thomas Griffiths, C.P.

Father Thomas Griffiths, a Passionist priest, died at Immaculate Conception Monastery, Jamaica, New York on Monday, February 5th, 2016 at 5am. Born February 27th, 1926, he was 89. Son of late Thomas W. Griffiths and the late Adelaide V. McDonald Griffiths; survived by his cousin, Eileen Bruni of Dallas, Texas. Father Griffiths graduated Bishop Loughlin High School, in Brooklyn, New York in 1944. He attended Niagara University from 1945-1947 and Holy Cross Prep Seminary, Dunkirk, New York from 1947-1949. He entered the Passionist novitiate in 1949 and professed vows in 1950 at Saint Paul of the Cross Monastery, Pittsburgh, PA in 1951. Bishop Cuthbert O’Gara, a Passionist missionary bishop from the Hunan Province in China, ordained him to the priesthood on May 3rd, 1957 at Saint Michael Monastery, Union City, NJ. After studies in philosophy and theology in various Passionist monasteries, Father Griffiths also received an MA in theology in 1957.

Father Griffiths completed study in preaching at Our Mother of Sorrows Monastery, West Springfield, MA, then conducted parish missions and retreats while residing at Saint Gabriel Monastery, Toronto, Ontario from 1959-1960. He was parochial vicar at Saint Michael Monastery Parish, Union City, NJ from 1961-1962. He received the Carnegie Medal for Herosim in 1961 and the Fire department Medal for Valor in 1962. Father Thomas was associate retreat director at Saint Paul of the Cross Retreat Center, Pittsburgh, PA from 1962-1964, and retreat director there from 1964-1969.

Father Griffiths then served as retreat director at Our Mother of Sorrows Retreat Center, West Springfield, MA from 1969-1970. He was a parochial vicar at Immaculate Conception Parish, Jamaica, NY from 1970-1973. In 1974 he returned to preaching parish missions and retreats. While residing at Saint Michael Monastery, Union City, NJ from 1974-1980, he received an MDiv from Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington, NJ in 1978. He also did preaching ministry from 1980-1984 while residing at Cardinal Spellman Retreat Center, Riverdale, NY. After a year at Saint Joseph Monastery, Baltimore, MD, Father Griffiths returned to Immaculate Conception Monastery, Jamaica, NY in 1985. He resided here and continued in the preaching apostolate from 1985 until his death.

The Vigil will be at Immaculate Conception Chapel (86-45 Edgerton Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11432) on Monday, February 8th, 2016 at 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Monastery Choir Room on Tuesday, February 9th, 2016 at 11am with Father Provincial Robert Joerger, C.P. as presider and homilist. Interment will immediately follow at the monastery cemetery.
