The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has a history of over 100 years, in which Christians around the world have taken part in an octave of prayer for visible Christian unity.
Blessed Dominic Barberi, Passionist (1792-1849) consecrated and offered his life for the unity of the Church — the mission to which he had been called by God and to which he devoted himself with great love and with many initiatives from the time of his youth. He longed for the return of the “separated brethren” to the Catholic Church — an expression coined by him. Pope Paul VI declared him “Blessed” on October 27, 1963 during Vatican II offering him as an example of commitment to ecumenism and joyfully proclaiming him to be an Apostle of unity.
We invite our Passionist religious and the Passionist Family to pray for this intention, especially through the intercession of Blessed Dominic.
who chose the Priest Blessed Dominic Barberi
to be a minister of your salvation,
so that by his teaching and example many might find
peace and reconciliation in your Church,
mercifully guide our steps, we humbly pray,
along the same way of love and truth,
until by your grace we gain its eternal reward.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.
