LETTER OF BISHOP

PAUL MICHAEL BOYLE, CP

The Superior General of the Passionists

Fr. Ottaviano D'Egidio, CP shares

with us the letter sent him by

Bishop Boyle a few days before he died:

In it he describes the considerable work he is still engaged in, notwithstanding his years, as well as his projects and dreams... It certainly is possible to dream, even at the age of 81! There's a note of nostalgia in his letter, mixed with a sense of the future and some good-humored irony regarding himself and others. Surely he was a courageous man, full of faith, who deeply loved the Congregation...

THE GENERAL SITUATION

IN KENYA TODAY

Third e-mail by

Fr. Filippo Astori, cp

Up till yesterday we've had three days of angry demonstrations in the streets… with deaths. Around Molo more houses were burned down. All our postulants have returned with the exception of two, due to the danger on the roads. The Theology students are all back. Many of them have suffered emotional shock after what they've lived through with their families

In 1964-1965 Boyle served as the president of the Canon Law Society of America and from 1965 to 1968 as its executive coordinator. He taught canon law and homeletics at Sacred Heart Seminary in Louisville and canon law at St. Meinrad Theological Seminary from 1965 to 1968. In 1969 Boyle became president of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men, a position he held until 1974. >From 1974 to 1976 he served as president of Stewardship Services Inc., an organization established by the CMSM to give financial assistance to religious communities. FEAST OF ST. CHARLES HOUBEN, CP AT

MUNSTERGELEEN, NETHERLANDS

Fathers Giovanni Zubiani, cp (General Postulator) and Luigi Vaninetti, cp (General Consultor) traveled to the village of Munstergeleen in the Netherlands to attend the celebrations held there on occasion of the feast of Saint Charles Houben, cp.
The house where Charles was born has been turned into a shrine, a place of prayer which attracts many devout pilgrims.
On January 4th 2008, an enormous likeness of the saint, painted on the side of the air-conditioning car of a brand new railway train, was duly blessed, and on the 5th, the saint's feast day, there was a solemn concelebration of the Eucharist presided over by the papal nunzio to the Netherlands, followed by a pious procession through the village streets, ending at the saint's old home. Some 700 people took part in this liturgical and faith-filled event.
