following the earthquake

“I too am here at St. Gabriel’s to share in the problems of my religious. The earthquake was also very powerful here at the Shrine. There have been many strong and small aftershocks, especially during the night. The old Shrine was declared uninhabitable due to several significant cracks. Also the building that houses our printing press is inaccessible due to serious structural damage.
Yesterday evening (Holy Thursday) we were in the new Shine for adoration before the Holy Eucharist. Suddenly there was a strong earth tremor. The structure which is completely constructed in steel and cement began to terrifyingly vibrate and creak. The people fled in panic. All of this made us realize that perhaps it is better to hold these celebrations of Holy Week and Easter outdoors. Last night I slept outside in the car and in the morning as soon as I had entered the monastery to bathe, there was another tremor. There is a good deal of tension and exhaustion because this has already been going on for several days. At night our immense parking lot is filled with cars because many people prefer to spend the night here since they don’t feel safe in their homes. We entrust ourselves to the Lord and to the intercession of St. Gabriel.
The monastery of St. Gabriel, up until now, is still intact – only some minor cracks here and there. Some of the sick in our provincial infirmary are sleeping in a trailer, while the others cannot leave their beds. The structure is holding up well and we trust that there will not be any more strong aftershocks. Some of our more courageous religious continue to sleep in their rooms even if occasionally they are abruptly awakened by a tremor. Initially they would flee at the first sign of a tremor; now they stay where they are.
May the Lord help all of us and allow us to have a peaceful and holy Easter. We thank those who have contacted us in various ways to seek information and to assure us of their support and prayer.”
